Vladimir Nabokov is, more than most, a writer of words, a writer of the language. His aesthetics are word-oriented, based on various kinds of language play. Even his prose is therefore so difficult to translate, although the stereotype of the ’impossibility of translation’ exists mainly for poetry.
It is often impossible to translate Nabokov’s images not only into another language but also intermediately: how should something which can only be embodied in words be represented visually?
