Light boxes used by photographers, medicine, advertising, museum design, etc., became a modern art genre in the 1980s thanks to the work of Canadian photographer Jeff Wall. In the 1990s light boxes appeared in the art of St Petersburg. The genealogy of light boxes genre goes back to the shadow theatre, ‘magic lanterns’, stained-glass windows, models of theatrical scenes, and children's ‘secrets’ to name just a few. A group exhibition of St Petersburg light box artists at the Vladimir Nabokov Museum is a unique event because it is the first time in the world when this genre is represented in all its various interpretations. The fairy-tale atmosphere of the exhibition in the Green Drawing Room of Nabokov's house is timed to coincide with the New Year and Christmas holidays.
